Raising the bar - Hurricane

Hamilton, Ohio – No surprises this time.

When the Fitton Center hosts its Mardi Gras Night Saturday, Feb. 18, guests are in for the perfect storm of music, dancing and Nawlins culture.

The Hot Magnolias promised a show where guests won’t want to sit down too much. When they do, they can cool off with the consummate Bourbon Street cocktail – a hurricane.

Resident mixologist Logan Adams plays the recipe pretty straight. The only twist in her version comes from using a blended passionfruit/mango juice instead of the more traditional passionfruit puree.

“It’s pretty close to the original, but the mango gives it a little bit more tropical feel,” she said. “I like to squeeze some fresh lime over the top, too, just for a little tartness to play off a very sweet drink.”

Invented during WWII at legendary New Orleans nightspot Pat O’Brien’s, the hurricane was born when whiskey became scarce and rum was the most available libation. Named for its serving glass – shaped like a hurricane lamp - not the force with which it hits you, hurricane cocktails are ubiquitous in the famed French Quarter, a must-have for any visitor.

(Editor’s note: Hurricanes do pack a wallop and – being so sweet – go down easy. You’ve been warned.)

Here’s the lowdown:

HURRICANE

1 oz spiced rum

1 oz light rum

1.5 oz passionfruit/mango juice

1.5 oz orange juice

.5 oz grenadine

Mix all ingredients in a chilled shaker and pour over ice

Squeeze the juice from a lime wedge and garnish with orange slice & cherries
