Hamilton, Ohio – ... Time is fleeting.
And so is the chance to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts. Nearly 50 years from its initial theatrical run, Rocky Horror... still draws an audience.
Which is one of the reasons Fitton Center Executive Director Ian MacKenzie-Thurley booked a return engagement for the cultiest of cult-classic films starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf. The Oct. 28 Fitton Cinema screening – complete with shadow cast performance from The Denton Affair - sold out.
“We’ve had good crowds in the past, but never sold out a Fitton Cinema screening before,” MacKenzie-Thurley said. “It has been an incredible response from our community to this show.
“The good news is we still have room in the theater for more fans. The bad news is, it’s a side view of the screen and shadow cast. The sightlines are limited, not the full-on front view from the main seating area. More good news is we can let people have those seats for just $5.”
The discounted partial-view tickets are available online here or by calling 513-863-8873, ext. 110. “Fans of the film know the story; a lot of people can recite this movie word for word. So this is a chance to still be part of the fun, to get together, dress up and interact,” MacKenzie-Thurley said. “The only thing is, you may have a better look at the rest of the audience than you will the screen.”
Which might be more fun anyway, according to Shadow Woolf – yes, that’s his real name – of The Denton Affair.
“Rocky Horror has always been about creating a safe place, a community, for the freaks and weirdos - I can say that because I was one of them - who might not have had a community before they experienced the film,” he said. “But that’s where a lot of that repeat-viewing loyalty comes from. There’s always an amazing energy from the audience.”
The Denton Affair – resident shadow cast company at Cincinnati’s Esquire Theater where Rocky Horror plays at midnight every other Saturday – is one of the oldest side-by-side performance troupes in the nation, appearing regularly since August of 1979.
“You’re paying the same price as a movie, but you’re getting a lot more,” Woolf said. “A whole lot. It’s an entire production. You have a wild experience. One of my favorite things is seeing people be impressed by the shadow cast, having their expectations defied.”
The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
