BPO Back to Fitton Center

Hamilton, Ohio – No strings attached.

When the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts February 7 for Fitton Family Fridays, Meet the Music 2 will have different look – and sound - than the original incarnation last year.

“The first time really captivated the audience,” said BPO General Manager Missy Beers. “We’re looking forward to doing that again, but in a different way this time.”

BPO swaps out last season’s string quintet for a woodwind trio. No viola, violin, cello or bass; instead audience members can expect flute, clarinet and bassoon to carry a program that – much like last season - includes classical music interspersed with interesting arrangements of more mainstream pop and rock tunes.

“It’s a little bit lighter sound,” Beers said. “Not as robust as the strings, but it’s just as versatile. Like the different shapes and sizes of the strings, the sizes and sounds of the woodwind instruments areall  very different. The flute is small and light; the bassoon is four-and-a-half feet tall.”

That’s one of the messages BPO wants to convey - different instruments produce different sounds. Individual sounds create a harmonious whole.

“A lot of what captivates the kids isn’t just the sound, but the harmonies and and the emotions the music evokes,” Beers said. “Classical music really introduces that concept. You’re not having to listen for the lyrics or watch a video and be distracted from the music. You’re really hyper-focused on listening to the music.”

Founded in 1951, the BPO has been instrumental – pardon the pun - in promoting classical music in and around Butler County for nearly 75 years. From the three-person woodwind trio all the way up to a full 80-piece orchestra, Dr. Scott Woodard conducts the music. Between the orchestra, the BPO chorus, youth symphony and auxilary, more than 300 people are directly involved in making music come to life.Beers is excited for the Fitton Center audience to see and hear the show.

“This round, we’re adding some movement for the audience to go with the music,” she said. “We’re making it a little more interactive. We’ll have the instrument ‘petting zoo’ after the performance again, but we have some different instruments to share.

“It’s always good to let kids put their hands on the instruments and see how they work. The more we can do to introduce kids and get them listening to different kinds of music, the better chance we have to develop a lifelong appreciation for all kinds of music.”

Tickets are $8 for Fitton Center members, $10 for non-members, and are available online right here, by phone at 513-863-8873, ext. 110 or in person at the Fitton Center box office. BPO: Meet the Music 2 is sponsored by Judy Mitchell and Kruger & Hodges Attorneys at Law.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
