Fall classes filling up

Hamilton, Ohio – Back to school season isn’t just for kids.

Fall art classes and workshops begin September 11 at the Fitton Center and senior citizens are filling studio spots faster than anyone else.

Both the Tuesday and Friday sections of the popular Creative Aging Painting classes sold out quickly, though a third section on Wednesdays still has available seats.

A quintet of new – or newly revived – classes highlight the ever-evolving offerings for burgeoning artists of all ages. Students in Digital Drawing & Storytelling (ages 10-13) and Digital Illustration (ages 13-17) learn how to create in the recently refurbished technology suite and have use of iPads donated by NetJets.

The Fitton Center hasn’t offered a fabric-art class in a long time, but added a Sewing Basics (age 18+) class to the fall roster. Students start at the beginning – learning to thread a sewing machine - and end up creating functional pieces ranging from a coffee cozy to sleep shorts.

Drawing Basics (age 18+) returns with an introduction to artistry primarily using graphite and Prismacolor colored pencils, while Portraits With Pizzaz (ages 7-12) explores drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking and collage to create self-portraits and more.

“We have a lot of repeat classes, but we also have a good number that that are either brand new or that haven’t been offered for a while,” said Kate Rowekamp, Director of Education and Outreach. “We want to give people the opportunity to try new things, or at least new twists on familiar things.

“We have a fantastic teaching staff. They are professional educators and amazing artists. Whether you’re a novice or an accomplished artist looking to brush up, we have a faculty that can help you learn and improve the creative skills you’d like to enhance.”

Some other fall classes include Printmaking, Youth Drawing Studio, 3D Mosaics, Teen Pottery, Wearable Mosaics, Youth Pottery, Anime Drawing Studio, Creative Aging Yoga, Functional Pottery and Kids’ Drawing & Painting.

Limited seats also remain for students interested in Get a Handle (pottery), Micro Mosaics, Afternoon Pottery Studio, Intermediate Wheel Throwing, Yoga Monday – Online, Mosaics: The Joy of Breaking Glass, Pre-Teen Pottery – Thursday, Wheel Throwing Basics and Creative Aging Mosaics.

Students still have time to get a $5 early-bird discount on classes and workshops if they register by September 4.

See the complete class and workshop offerings for both fall sessions in the 2023 Fall Education Brochure.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
