Member Show offers invitations

Hamilton (OH) – Connect. Celebrate. Play. Rest.

The artwork on display in the Fitton Center for Creative Arts’ 30th Anniversary Member Show invites viewers to do any or all of the above.

The exhibition officially kicks off with a gallery-opening celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11 and remains on view through July 12.

It includes artworks by about 70 member artists and their families, featuring more than 110 pieces of original art and treasured heirlooms from the broad spectrum of Fitton Center artists.

For some, the Member Show marks their first time sharing their work publicly. For others, the Member Show is a return to familiar galleries, having already exhibited here and beyond for many years.

“We are happy to present such a range of exciting artwork and to emphasize the creative and healing relationships within families, classrooms and our larger community,” said Cathy Mayhugh, director of exhibitions. “We are grateful for the visual energy and sense of community offered by our active and supportive members.”

The ground-floor Monument Gallery exemplifies the idea of connection. Colorful works by mosaics instructors Lori Kay Farr and Creative Aging painting instructor Chrissy Collopy appear alongside pieces by many of their students and other member artists.

The second-floor Riverview Gallery emphasizes celebrations and images of America. The emotive art brings to mind Fouth of July cookouts (complete with fireworks), burgers and outdoor concerts. It joins gritty city skylines with homey antique hardware and objects passed down through generations.

The Bever West Gallery on the second floor takes advantage of its unconventional layout to feature large-scale sculpture and artwork begging for dramatic lighting. Pieces in this gallery embody both a playful and disconcerting energy - rock stars, fantastic landscapes, gods and monsters. Repeated orbs and spheres orbit the room, giving viewers a peek into worlds known and imagined.

The second floor Bever North Gallery connects to the rest of the building by way of a warm gallery corridor and encourages guests to step inside to take a break, reflect and rest. Artwork here includes relics and ruins infused with the slow passage of time. Heirlooms by elders stand alongside works by younger relatives, linking generations with memories and creative gifts.

The 30th Anniversary Member Show gallery opening is free and open to the public.

The gallery opening immediately precedes the sold-out Drag Show 3: Through the Decades - the final show in the Fitton Center Jazz & Cabaret series and 2023-2024 season finale – which starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
