Brubeck tribute: Take Five

Music filled the room.

Music lessons filled the time between numbers.

The Phil DeGreg Trio and guest saxophonist Rick VanMatre brought their tribute to Dave Brubeck - Take Five - to the Fitton Center Jan. 21.

While much of the show centered on the legendary pianist's Time Out album, DeGreg also described how Brubeck become one of the first pop stars in jazz music, performed in (pardon the pun) offbeat time signatures and brought jazz into the American mainstream.

The sold-out audience had an active role, too, providing the 7/4 rhythm for "Unsquare Dance."

Before the music began, the Fitton Center officially dedicated a piece of art installed just outside the ballroom where the show took place.

Nancy Moran donated a century-old stained-glass window her father found in a building on the site of what is now the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

Next up for the Jazz & Cabaret series at the Fitton Center - The Hot Magnolias return to the ballroom for a sizzling respite from the winter doldrums as we celebrate Mardi Gras Saturday, Feb. 18.
