Functional Pottery

Ages: Adults

This class puts the “FUN” in functional. Take your ceramic skills to the next level by creating beautiful utilitarian pottery using the slab hand-building method combined with tons of pattern and texture! Projects will be students’ choice and individual innovations are highly encouraged. This class covers glaze and underglaze techniques, stamping, sgraffito, altering, and more. Students will be challenged to expand their pottery expertise while enjoying an evening with fellow clay lovers.

 

All adult students must purchase clay. Only clay purchased through the Fitton Center may be fired in the facility’s kilns.​

Youth Pottery

Ages: 6-9

Have fun with clay as you explore its endless possibilities. Discover hand-building techniques such as coiling and slab building. Create original tiles, pinch pots and more!  Students will learn how to finish their project with underglazes and glazes and take home their very own works of art. Using these methods, students will create sculptures and useful decorative items as they develop their artistic abilities through self-expression.

Pottery Basics

Ages: Adults

This class is for the adult who is completely new to pottery or for those with basic skills who still consider themselves beginners. Master the basics of hand-building with clay to create pots, platters and more. Learn to work with coils and slabs and create surface textures with a variety of tools. Finished work will incorporate various glazing and decorating techniques.

All adult students must purchase clay. Only clay purchased through the Fitton Center may be fired in the facility’s kilns.

Afternoon Pottery Studio

Ages: Adults

This class is for all levels. Learn a variety of clay techniques including wheel throwing. Bring your ideas and images of what you would like to create and receive guidance on how to best make your plans a reality. In this class both beginner and advanced clay students alike are encouraged to build a community by sharing ideas, suggestions, tips, tricks, and techniques. 

All adult students must purchase clay. Only clay purchased through the Fitton Center may be fired in the facility’s kilns.

Pre-Teen Pottery

Ages: 10-13
Instructor: Sally Runge

Dig into clay as you learn hand-building techniques such as slab building, coiling, and pinch pots. Create sculptures, tiles, and vessels, as well as free choice projects. Students will have a chance to try the pottery wheel with help from the instructor. Painting and glazing techniques will also be covered.

Wheel Throwing

Ages: Adults
Instructor: Rebecca Rohr

For those who are new to the pottery wheel or just haven’t done it in a while. Learn the basics (or get a refresher) on wheel throwing and glazing in this class. Students will first learn how to center clay on the pottery wheel and then learn to create basic pottery forms. Finished work will incorporate glazing and decorating techniques. Advanced students are also welcome to join our friendly community of potters! You will be encouraged as you practice your forms and learn new techniques. Students may repeatedly take the course to continually advance their development or explore techniques of their interest with more depth.

Creative Teen Pottery

Ages: 13-17
Instructor: Carol Waldorf

Plan your own unique clay project and then learn the pottery techniques needed to make it happen! Emphasis will be on the individual experience, with personalized guidance from the instructor on how to best complete your designs. Use strategies like coiling, slab work, sculpture, and basic pottery wheel skills to bring your visions to life. Sculpt your favorite video game or TV show character, make a custom cup or mug, design your own unique jewelry, and more!
