Meet the Intern - Abby Vollmer

Hamilton, Ohio – The Fitton Center is home to one of the premiere summer-camp programs in the state, offering 33 different camps over a six-week span and serving more than 300 young artists ages 5 to 16 in June and July.

It’s a big job and the education team added a summer intern to help do it.

Meet Abby Vollmer.

The 2025 Sycamore High School graduate recently completed her first year at Miami University in Oxford, where she’s studying art education. She works closely with Kate Rowekamp and Caroline Digiovenale to help the Summer Camp Creativity 2026 program run smoothly.

“It’s always going to be busy and hectic with so many camps running at once, but I like it,” Vollmer said. “It’s something different every day.”

Busy and hectic might as well be Abby’s middle names.

Vollmer comes to the Fitton with some previous teaching internships under her belt, as well as plenty of artistic experience in her own right. In addition to her internship at the Fitton Center, she works as a photographer with Dan Leadbetter Photography and recently started her own business specializing in engagement, graduation and wedding photography.

She’s also a theater artist, working mostly in sound design and execution (she returns to run the board for Sycamore High’s summer production of Seussical: The Musical). For good measure, she also works part time at Pipkin’s Market in Montogomery, Ohio.

Vollmer has an eye on her future with the internship.

“I hope to learn the back side of the job,” she said. “Doing the prep work, the planning. My other internships, my host teachers did that and we just stepped in to do the instruction part in the front of the classroom. This will give me a more complete picture.”

Vollmer views working with a broad age range during camp season as another benefit.

“I like the idea of being flexible with a bunch of different age groups,” she said. “I’ve mostly worked with middle school students, so working with high schoolers and elementary ages this summer will be good experience for me.”

Away from work, Vollmer enjoys rock climbing, exploring different artistic mediums and spending time with friends, as well as with her dog Bonnie. She described her canine companion as a “super mutt,” part lab, part bull terrier, part lots of other breeds. She also has a 13-year-old goldfish named Golden (“My first-grade self thought that was a clever name,” Vollmer said.) and a pair of frogs named Lemon and Lime.
