Meet the intern: Hannah Houchins

Hamilton, Ohio – Her reputation may not have preceded her, but her work did.

Meet Hannah Houchins, the Summer Camp Creativity 2025 intern. While she’s only been on the job since Monday, June 9, Fitton Center aficionados got a preview of her ability more than month before she started.

Houchins designed the poster and graphics for the Miami University Regionals Students Today Artists Tomorrow exhibition currently on view in the Community Gallery. (She also helped hang the show and has artwork in the show.)

Makes sense. A 2021 graduate of Franklin High School, Houchins graduates from Miami University in December with a degree in community arts and a double minor in arts management and graphic design.

She’s no stranger to working with children, either. Houchins has been a nanny for a family with three children for the last five years.

Much of her intern work happens behind the scenes. Among other tasks, Houchins collects and checks each camper’s health and safety forms, checks campers in and signs them out each day and assembles and distributes goody bags for campers at the end of every session. She assists in preparing the materials and rooms campers and instructors will each day of camp.

“It’s been good so far,” she said. “I love doing the organization stuff, the paperwork. I feel like I have both sides of my brain working.”

Though Houchins leaned more toward the sporty side of things in high school – she was a football and basketball cheerleader at Franklin – she comes by her interest in art honestly. Her father creates photo-realism drawings in Florida and she has an aunt who is a graphic designer.

“I started painting during Covid and really liked it,” she said. “I started drawing in college and I like that, too. I know in community arts you have to wear a lot of hats, so I think it’s good to have the art, the organization, the design work. You have to do a little bit of everything.”

Houchins will be part of the Fitton Center team through July.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
